Floods: Karachi Police asks People to donate funds to Reputed NGO’S

KARACHI: Karachi Metropolitan Police Officer (CCPO) Javed Alam Odho on Monday advised people to donate funds to flood victims through reputable and well-known non-governmental organizations (NGOs) and philanthropists.

CCPO Karachi’s comments came after relief camps representing an unnamed NGO popped up around the city to raise funds under the guise of helping flood victims across the country.

“Citizens should only donate supplies and funds to reputable NGOs to ensure that donations reach affected people and do not fall into the wrong hands,” he said.

The Pakistani government, provincial governments, the military, PTI chairman Imran Khan, and several political parties are also collecting donations, and a prominent NGO is raising funds to help flood victims during difficult times.

Pakistan has also received funds and supplies from international organizations and fraternal nations for floods that have devastated people in all four of her provinces in the country.

At the request of Prime Minister Shebaz Sharif, a plane from the United Arab Emirates (UAE) landed at Nur Khan Air Base in Rawalpindi on Sunday. Relief supplies include tents, food, medicine and other essentials. The UAE Ambassador to Pakistan and Planning Minister Afsan Iqbal received relief supplies at the airport.

It is important to mention that 15 more planes loaded with aid will arrive in Pakistan in the next few days by order of UAE President Sheikh Mohammed bin Zayed Al Nahyan.

Death toll mounts 1000

The death toll from Pakistan’s monsoon floods since June has reached 1,033, according to figures released on Sunday by the country’s National Disaster Management Agency (NDMA).

It said 119 people had died in the past 24 hours as heavy rains continued to ravage parts of the country.

The annual monsoons are essential for irrigating crops and filling lakes and dams across the Indian subcontinent, but they also bring waves of destruction each year.
