‘Lore Olympus’ named best webcomic at Eisner Awards

The webcomic “Lower Olympus” published by Webtoon, an American unit of Neighbor Webtoon, won the Will Eisner Comic Industry Award.

According to the website of San Diego Comic-Con International, the organizer of the
prestigious annual award, Rachel Smythe’s “Lower Olympus” was selected as the winner of the Best Webcomic category.

The webcomic revolves around the love stories of Greek mythology and the stories of other gods and is presented in a contemporary setting. It was first uploaded to the “Canvas” section of the platform.

There, amateur web tonists present their work, and if the work gets a good response from the viewer, they have the opportunity to debut as a professional webtoon on the platform.

“(Smythe) began as a webtoon canvas and saw the creation of” Lore Olympus “as a creative challenge that spent countless nights to realize their vision. The “Lore Olympus” has gained worldwide attention since it was first released on Webtoon in March 2018 and has been viewed more than 1.1 billion times so far. His graphic novel version was ranked number one on the New York Times graphic book bestseller list last December.

“Navillera: Like a Butterfly”, a Korean webtoon about a 70-year-old man pursuing his dream of becoming a ballerino, was also nominated for the Eisner Awards for Best Webcomic, but was unsuccessful.

Written by Hung and drawn by Jimmy, it was the only work by a Korean creator among the five candidates in this category.
